Kurt escaped to Winzeldorf, Germany, but tragedy followed when his adoptive brother, Stefan (Margali’s biological son), went insane and began murdering children. Kurt fought and accidentally broke Stefan's neck while trying to stop him.The local townspeople mistook Kurt for a demon responsible for the killings and formed a murderous lynch mob. Just as they cornered him, Professor Charles Xavier intervened, paralyzing the mob psychically. Xavier recruited Kurt into his new international team of mutants, where Kurt adopted the codename Nightcrawler and finally found a true home with the X-Men.
