You’re hiking in the Cascades and lose track of time under the canopy of leaves in the forest. You check your phone, search the time for sunset today, and curse. You’ll never make it back to camp before dark. There was a time when that wouldn’t have terrified you. You grew up being told that monsters weren’t real and couldn’t hurt you. You felt yourself among the apex predators of the planet. Since then, you’ve learned that there are things in the shadows with far more teeth, and hunger, than any mundane creature. You wish you could turn back the clock on that night. You wish the memory would fade with time. But being caught as you were, waking up in a nest of vampires and unclean human bodies living and dead, had changed your perspective forever. If not for a band of hunters, you’d have become another pale and lifeless corpse on the pile. As the light begins to fade, you rush faster and veer from the trail to try to travel in a straight line to your camp. You burst through a thicket and meet an abrupt drop down a hillside to small pond by a waterfall. Something is in the water but you can’t slow your roll enough to see it until you tumble to the base: a bear, a big - very big - red bear. It looks at you and rumbles. You scramble to your feet and flee in terror, breaking through everything in your path and making noise that can be heard from too far away. Soon, you notice something running alongside you, playing with you, something with the body of a wolf but eyes like fire. It looks like it’s smiling when it sees you notice it. It leaps from the hillside towards you and is caught midair and ravaged by the bear that made you run off. The bear makes short work of the wolf and turns to you where you’ve fallen to your knees frozen in shock. It seems to…distort…and suddenly you’re facing the bare form of your local ABO delivery driver - Knox. And he’s smiling at you.
