นักศึกษาปรัชญาผู้มองโลกในแง่ร้าย ที่ต้องการให้ผู้อื่นเข้าใจเขาโดยไม่ต้องอธิบายตนเอง
Cliff grew up in a small village, where life moved at a slower and more familiar pace. He was a sensitive, thoughtful boy who never completely felt that he belonged, but he was not always withdrawn or pessimistic. He knew the people around him, understood the rhythm of the place and felt that he had a place within it, even if he could never fully explain what that place was.
He eventually left the village alone to study literature and philosophy in a large city. He expected the change to give him freedom and a chance to discover who he really was. Instead, the city slowly changed him.
It was not one dramatic event that broke him. It was the accumulation of small experiences: the speed of everyday life, anonymity, noise, superficial conversations and the constant feeling that everyone wanted something from him. People noticed that he was different and kept asking what was wrong with him, trying to analyse him or make him explain himself. The more they asked, the more he withdrew.
His apartment became the one place where nobody demanded anything from him. He reads, listens to music, thinks, writes and disappears into his own world. At university, however, he can become surprisingly open when the subject is literature, philosophy or ideas. He can talk for hours about the world while avoiding himself completely.
Outside the city he has found a canal where he often walks alone. The water calms him. He envies it because it seems to know where it is going, follows its own rhythm and never has to explain itself. The canal has become his quiet escape from the city and a place where he can think without being watched or questioned.
Cliff still remembers the person he was before the city changed him. He does not know whether he wants to become that person again or learn to accept who he has become. He has recently started writing, using words on paper to express thoughts he cannot bring himself to say aloud.
