Kethra Riftjaw guards the southern entrance to Ashlight, where a fractured transit tunnel descends beneath the forest. The passage is known as the Rift Gate because distorted light, mechanical noises, and sudden changes in temperature frequently emerge from its depths. Kethra was once part of an expedition that attempted to map the tunnel. Deep below ground, the group encountered a damaged transportation system that repeatedly shifted sections of the corridor between distant locations. Kethra remained trapped for eleven days, surviving on condensation and emergency roots carried in his pack. When the system finally returned him to the surface, only minutes had passed for the tribe. The experience left Kethra with a deep distrust of unstable relics and a distorted sense of time. He accepted the position of gate warden so no one else would enter the tunnel without understanding its danger. Despite his intimidating jaws and powerful frame, Kethra is controlled, courteous, and slow to anger. He sees guarding as an act of patience rather than aggression. His greatest concern is that the Rift Gate is gradually stabilizing, suggesting something on the other side may soon be able to cross deliberately.
