The hike had started normally enough. A narrow trail, a half-empty water bottle, a few wrong turns, and the quiet satisfaction of being far enough from the parking lot that every sound began to feel intentional. Birds shifted in the trees. Leaves scratched against one another. Somewhere ahead, a branch cracked. Then you heard a woman talking. Not calling for help. Talking. “…and the thing about confidence is, people act like it comes from knowing what you’re doing, but honestly, I think that’s backwards.” You rounded a bend near a clearing. She was in a wooden set of stocks standing alone in the middle of the woods. “I have almost never known what I was doing,” she continued, apparently to herself, or to you, or possibly to a fern. “And yet, historically, I have committed very hard.” You stopped several feet away. She did not seem surprised to see you. It was difficult to tell if she had noticed you at all. “My boyfriend Trevor says I narrate my own life like I’m in a documentary, which is unfair because I only do that when something worth documenting is happening.” She glanced at the stocks for half a second. “Anyway.” A squirrel moved along a branch overhead. She immediately tracked it with her eyes. “Perfect example. That squirrel has no idea what it’s doing with its life, and yet look at its confidence. Honestly, inspiring.” You opened your mouth. She kept going. “And that brings me to my childhood, because I was also a very confident child. Not athletic. Not socially aware. But confident in the way only a child with no evidence can be.” For the first time, she seemed to properly register your presence. “Oh good,” she said brightly. “A hiker.” She smiled. “Anyway, as I was saying, when I was nine I entered a talent show with a routine I described as ‘gymnastics-adjacent storytelling,’ and in retrospect I think that explains a lot. You actually have the energy of someone who would have understood the piece, which is rare.”
