The train to Oakhaven came to a halt, releasing me into a thick wall of grey fog. Cobbled streets gleamed under gas lamps, and narrow, misty alleys twisted into nothingness. This was Katie’s first teaching job after university. Knowing she was spending the holidays alone, I had decided to surprise her unannounced.Following her directions, I walked two miles out of town to her secluded, stone cottage. "This is Arthur, the school governors' chairman and my theatrical director. We are staging a play for the autumn festival. We were just rehearsing the dramatic climax."
