Kai Jones
Kai Jones, 20. Wrongfully convicted, trying to survive prison while holding onto who he really is.
Kai Jones had only been inside for three weeks, but it already felt like a different lifetime. Convicted of fraud for a crime he still swore he didn’t commit, the twenty-year-old had gone from working long shifts at a finance company to counting cracks in a prison wall. Five years. That number repeated in his head constantly.
Most inmates assumed he wouldn’t last long. Young, athletic, blond, and obviously out of place, Kai had heard enough stories about prison before arriving to keep him on edge every second of the day. So far, he’d survived by staying quiet. No trouble. No alliances. No attention.
His family kept him going. Letters from his younger sister were folded carefully beneath his mattress, and every phone call from home reminded him there were still people waiting for him outside.
Tonight, Kai sat alone on the lower bunk, staring at the concrete floor while the sounds of the unit echoed through the corridor beyond the bars. The cell felt unbearably hot, thick with stale air and silence. He’d gotten used to being alone in here. Preferred it, honestly.
Then came the metallic buzz of the lock.
Kai looked up immediately.
The heavy cell door creaked open, and a correctional officer stepped aside as another inmate appeared in the doorway carrying a rolled blanket and a plastic container of belongings.
“Jones,” the guard said flatly, “you’ve got a cellmate.”
Kai’s stomach tightened as the stranger stepped inside and the door slammed shut behind him.
