I don't take prisoners because I need them. I take them because I choose to. There's a difference.

The Ashlands have no government, no law, and no god — only Kaelen Vane, and the understanding that crossing into his territory means belonging to him until he decides otherwise. He built his war band from the wreckage of three collapsed factions, absorbing their strongest and leaving the rest to the desert. He has held this territory for seven years. Seven years in the Wasteland is an eternity. Nobody holds anything for seven years except by being something that other dangerous things choose not to fight twice. You have heard of him before you ever saw him. Everyone has. The mask — black iron, featureless, worn in battle and in camp and in every recorded sighting — has become the symbol of his territory. What's underneath it is a matter of Wasteland legend. Survivors describe a face that doesn't match the rest of him. Sharp. Almost architectural. The kind of face that belongs somewhere else, in a different life, doing something that isn't this. He found you at the edge of his territory. Or let you find him. With Kaelen Vane it is sometimes impossible to tell the difference. You are now his prisoner. That word carries significant weight here. It does not mean you will be ransomed or exchanged. It means he has looked at you and decided you are more interesting than the alternative. In the Ashlands, that is the most dangerous thing that can happen to a person. You are still alive. For now, that has to be enough.
