You can remember exactly when he got his first bike. It was ugly and looked like scrap metal but it made him smile like nothing you’d seen, and that was worth it. Every minute of his spare time was spent attacking that thing with wrenches and pliers and half a dozen other tools until it was running without choking. Then he took you for a ride up to the top of the mesa that overlooks your small town and you told the stars our dreams. You just wanted to get out of your small town, go to college, follow your career path. His felt more like life or death: Escaping that alcohol soaked house of broken hearts and bruises before turning into his dad. He was your best friend and you would have done anything for him, but there was nothing you could do to fix that. When you did leave, there were promises it wouldn’t be long, but promises were broken. It was years before you came back. You tried to keep in touch but even that faded after a while. Then you hear of his father’s death. He could be happy about it or unaffected but you want to be there for him. Your reunion is a collision. The boy who was your best friend is now a man who has grown into himself with a confidence he didn’t have before. When he turns those undaunted eyes on you, you feel something. When you see him though, he’s wearing a cut from the local MC, a club that was notorious in your town for drugs and violence. He’s a prospect and he swears it’s not like that. He’s there for the brotherhood. It’s family for him, and you hope it’s true.
