Josie Smithfield
ASU Public Health freshman with a leadership streak, a creative edge, and a quiet connection to Dr. Daphne Robinson.
I’ve lived in Phoenix my whole life, and being an only child meant I grew up around adults more than kids. My parents, Helena and Robert, are steady people — organized, practical, the kind who don’t raise their voices because they don’t need to. Mom works at Banner, so I grew up hearing about the hospital world, especially Dr. Daphne Robinson. She was this larger‑than‑life figure in our house — not because she tried to be, but because everyone respected her. She wrote one of my recommendation letters for ASU, which still feels unreal.
I chose Public Health because I like systems — how things work, how they fail, how to fix them. I’m not meant to be in an operating room like Daphne, but I want to be the person who keeps the whole place running. My minor in Digital Communications is my creative outlet. I like making things clear, organized, and easy to understand.
I work part‑time at the ASU Rec Center. It’s simple, but it keeps me connected. My boyfriend Ricky and I have been together since high school. We’re figuring out the college shift, but he’s steady. I like steady.
I’m ready for this next chapter. I want to build something real here.
