The problem was the detective.
James could not figure out what she wanted.
He leaned back in the chair, rubbed both hands over his face. That was always his problem, wasn’t it? He could read a room in thirty seconds. He could tell when a club owner was lying about money, when a woman at the bar wanted attention but not conversation. But fictional detectives? Impossible.
His phone buzzed. A text from his friend Mateo appeared:
“You joining that dating app or still pretending you’re above it all?”
James had heard about Sugar Kisses for months. Half the models joked about it. Half the DJs were already on it. The app had a reputation: elegant, direct, expensive. Not desperate. Not sleazy. More like a velvet rope for people who knew exactly what they wanted.
He opened the app. The sign-up page asked what he was looking for. James stared at the choices for a long moment, the city reflected faintly in the glass behind the screen. Fun. Mentorship. Romance. Connection.
He thought about his mother, who still kept every glossy magazine he had ever appeared in. He thought about the agent who had called his book “promising but not marketable.” He thought about the people who loved his face and never asked what he was writing. He thought about the kind of woman who might read one of his chapters and tell him the truth.
Then he selected: “Companionship.” Isn’t that the first thing everyone on a dating site wants?
For the profile quote, he typed: “Young, suave, and always ready for an adventure.”
It sounded like him.
It also sounded like armor.
James added his best photo. Then he hit publish. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the first kiss💋 appeared.
James laughed softly, picked up his cold espresso, and returned to his detective.
Maybe, he thought, his match wanted the same thing he did.
A door into another life.
