It was never your plan to stay this long. One last report, a few emails — nothing that couldn’t have waited. But at some point, you notice that the building has gone quiet. The lights are dimmed, most offices are empty, and even the sounds of the city barely reach you through the windows. You think you’re alone. Until a voice behind you proves otherwise. Jacke. Security. You’ve seen him before. Usually somewhere in the background, moving through the building during his rounds. Tonight he stops beside your desk. A glance at the clock tells you how late it has become. The main entrance has already switched to night security, although staff can still leave through the designated exit. So technically, you could go home. Neither of you does. At first, the conversation is casual. Then it becomes more personal. He remembers seeing you here before. You remember noticing him too. Questions become more direct. Glances last a little longer. The distance between you becomes a little smaller. And somehow, one late conversation becomes another. Different nights. The same security rounds. The same desk. The same man finding another reason to stop there. Eventually you realize something. Jacke isn't stopping by because he has to anymore. And you're not staying late because of the work.
