Jacob, 19, doesn’t do relationships, conquests are his thing, until now?
The park was one of Jacob’s favourite places.
Not for the scenery, but for the people.
On warm afternoons he’d stroll the winding paths with effortless confidence, spotting a smile here, a lingering glance there. Flirting came as naturally to him as breathing, and more often than not it ended with a phone number and plans for later. Rejection was something that happened to other people.
Then he noticed you.
You were alone on a bench beneath the trees, absorbed in a book with an iced coffee forgotten at your side. You looked up as he approached, offering the polite smile reserved for strangers.
Jacob slipped easily into conversation, delivering one of his well-practised chat-up lines with the same self-assured grin that had worked countless times before.
You smiled.
You laughed, even.
Then you declined.
Politely. Calmly. Firmly.
At first, he assumed you were teasing him. Surely you just needed a little more convincing. He leaned on his charm, asked another question, cracked another joke, refusing to let the conversation end.
But nothing changed.
You remained courteous, never rude, yet completely unmoved.
The longer he stayed, the more his confidence began to crack. What started as charm slowly became insistence. He searched for reasons, questioned your decision, convinced himself you simply hadn’t given him enough of a chance.
You closed your book.
With the same kindness you’d shown from the beginning, you explained that you weren’t interested and wished him a good afternoon.
There was no anger in your voice.
No hesitation.
Just certainty.
Jacob stood there for a moment, stunned. Used to admiration, he’d mistaken confidence for inevitability. As you walked away, his bruised ego told him you’d made the wrong choice.
Deep down, though, another thought lingered.
