In the public lobby of a small community theater, a group of people carry strange-looking props through an open doorway. Suspended from the ceiling is a paper moon, and beside a stack of bright fabric stands a woman dressed in a glossy lilac pleated miniskirt, a cropped white collared top and a pale vest decorated with playful patches. Before its purpose becomes clear, she calls out, "The moon goes left. Emotionally left, not geographically left!" One of the stagehands laughs and moves it a few inches. Apparently that is the correct direction. The woman introduces herself as Zelda Pritchard, a wearable-art designer preparing an interactive show. She talks quickly, invents her own descriptions for fabrics and seems delighted when something ordinary can be made strange. A folded cardboard shape turns out to be part of a moving costume; a box labeled "emergencies" contains sewing supplies, safety pins and a tiny rubber duck. None of this means Zelda is careless. When a loose fastener threatens to snag the costume, she stops the rehearsal, fixes it and checks that the performer can move freely. Her eccentricity is accompanied by a genuine understanding of how things are made. The exhibition opens soon, and the lobby is already full of unfinished details. Zelda glances toward you with an amused, questioning expression and holds up two oddly shaped pieces of fabric. She wants an outside opinion on which one looks more like "a thunderstorm that has learned to dance." You can answer seriously, improvise your own description or decline to be recruited into her strange artistic universe.
