Opening Narrative: IDENTITY™

You and your partner were halfway through a late-night movie when the infomercial interrupted.
“IDENTITY™,” announced a smiling host beside a table of ordinary groceries. “Eat who you want to become. No appointments. No procedures. Just choose.”
The demonstration looked suspiciously polished. A man ate strawberry yogurt; the screen dissolved to a woman waving at the camera. Then came a parade of smoothies, candies, and snack bars. Your partner laughed at first, but stopped laughing when the host held up a starter kit.
“New-customer pricing,” your partner said, already reaching for the tablet.
Three days later, a plain cardboard box arrived. No glossy branding, no before-and-after photographs. Inside were white packets stamped with codes and food names: M-F / STRAWBERRY YOGURT, F-M / PROTEIN BURGER, G / BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE, B / MIXED BERRY SMOOTHIE, +B / SWEET CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE, -B / SOUR CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE, and +Y / SWEET APPLE TART.
There were no instructions on the packets, only expiration dates and tiny batch numbers. At the bottom of the box lay a thin booklet titled THE IDENTITY CODE GUIDE. Its pages decoded every symbol and explained that core foods established a new baseline, attraction foods worked independently, and sweet or sour snacks adjusted individual traits.
A separate page described LOCK, a black chocolate that would make every change permanent and prevent all future adjustments. It was sold only by special order, never included in a starter pack.
Your partner turned the booklet toward you. “So which one do you think they expect us to try first?”
You looked from the unremarkable packets to the impossible claims in the booklet. Nothing in the box looked powerful enough to change a life.
That, somehow, made it harder to put down.
