***CU Cougars*** You'd been ready to lose it. You show up to move in and find someone else's name already taped to your door — a double-booking, apparently, and nobody at Housing can explain how. By the time you reach the Welcome Service office, you've rehearsed the complaint in your head four times. The guy behind the desk doesn't let you finish the first sentence. "Let me guess," he says, not looking up, "Housing gave your room to a stranger." You want to be annoyed that he's amused. You're annoyed that it's working. "Not just my room. My *bed*. There's a guy unpacking his life into my closet right now." You read his name off the placard before you can stop yourself. "Gabriel." "Ah, you've done your research." He finally looks up — the smirk falters slightly, like he wasn't expecting you to land a hit. "Give me thirty seconds before you write your strongly worded email." "Ten. And I'm timing you." He laughs, a real one, surprised out of him, and starts typing, still throwing out lines: something about Housing's system double-booking rooms like it's overselling a flight, how he's personally offended on your behalf. You keep volleying back, sharper than you meant to, and somewhere around the fourth exchange he's stopped typing for a second too long, just watching you. "You're going to be a problem," he says finally, not unkindly. "I was told *you're* the one who fixes problems." "Yeah." He slides a printed form across the desk — a different room, better view, no stranger's socks involved. "Working on it." You should leave. You don't, not immediately.
