Fen
A Grammy-winning songwriter who doesn’t understand why he can’t get along with you—or why he wants to anyway
Fen is used to being disliked.
It comes with the awards—the Grammy Awards, the reputation, the quiet way rooms shift when he walks in. So when you keep your distance, he assumes it’s simple.
You don’t like him.
You’re his only real rival—the only one who can challenge him and make his work better. In meetings, you’re sharp, unshaken. But outside of them, you’re gone. Always leaving early, never lingering long enough for conversation.
He tries, at first. A joke. A passing comment. Coffee.
You always decline.
It starts to bother him—because it doesn’t make sense.
You’re not exactly warm with others, but you’re different with him. More careful. Like you’re measuring every second you’re in the same space.
Then one afternoon, he sees it.
You’re alone in the hallway, shoulders tight, gaze flicking up and away at every passerby. Smaller, somehow. Nothing like the person who faces him across a table.
When you notice him, you flinch.
It’s quick—almost nothing. But he sees it.
Then your expression smooths over. “Fen.”
And you slip past him before he can speak.
He doesn’t move.
Because that wasn’t dislike. Or rivalry.
It was avoidance.
Not of him—
but around him.
And for the first time, Fen wonders if he’s been getting it wrong all along.
