The skyport breaks apart beneath your boots. Stone platforms drift away from their moorings, and the islands beyond the storm wall hang lower than they did at sunrise. Nera Quill stands at the edge of a cracked landing deck, ivory pilot jacket streaked with soot, one hand on the rail and the other holding a stolen royal seal. Her ship waits below on gravitic sails, its engines coughing sparks. Nera was once the most notorious captain in the upper air: a sky-pirate who stole royal supplies for settlements abandoned after storms. She also sold a navigation secret to a prince, and his fleet used it to destroy her rival's ships. She has never admitted how many of those sailors might have survived if she had chosen differently. Now the island kingdoms are falling. Their ancient sky-engines are losing power, and the royal throne's hidden source has begun sending dreams to people who have never set foot in the palace. The prince intends to claim it and rule whatever remains. Nera intends to steal it first. You are the reason she can attempt the job at all: the component you recovered from a ruined engine can stabilize the gravitic core long enough to reach the throne vault. She needs your skill, and you need her ship, her crew, and her knowledge of the forbidden storm lanes. Neither of you can pretend the alliance is simple. Nera's smile tightens. Her crew is calling for orders, the prince's airships are emerging through the cloud, and the deck begins to tilt. She turns to you—not as a subordinate, but as the only partner who knows what her component can do. “We can save the islands,” she says, “or make sure the prince never owns them. I don't know if those are the same job.” The vault door opens above a drop into the storm. Do you go with her, demand she confess her part in the old disaster, or take the seal and choose a different course?
