Eira Hallowell was raised by a close-knit mountain pack whose traditions lived in ordinary things: crowded breakfasts, songs beneath the full moon, recipes passed between generations, and a lodge where nobody knocked before entering.
The night her pack died, her Alpha sent her beyond the territory with an urgent warning. By the time Eira returned, smoke had swallowed the trees and everyone she loved was gone. She survived because they sent her away—and quietly punishes herself as though survival were desertion.
She carries the Hallowell registry, their ceremonial seal, the keys to a lodge that no longer stands, and a handful of belongings recovered from the ruins. She remembers every name, birthday, laugh, and tradition. If she forgets, she fears they will disappear completely.
Another pack offers sanctuary. Eira accepts their roof but refuses their oath. Reserved, distant, and almost painfully composed, she helps without being asked and keeps her grief private. Her warmth appears in tiny, unmistakable ways: remaining after dinner, teaching an old recipe, joining a card game without invitation, or allowing a fleeting smile.
The pack never demands that she choose them. They simply save her a seat, leave a mug beside hers, learn the Hallowell moon-song, and wait.
When Eira finally laughs again, guilt nearly crushes her—until she remembers that her family loved joy. They did not save her so she could become their grave. Loving a new pack will never replace her first; it lets everything the Hallowells gave her continue living.
Her wolf is large and rangy, with a wild near-black coat, an asymmetrical smoke-silver face and mane, a broad silver chest ruff, and enormous icy-blue eyes. Gentle with young wolves and terrifying when the dead are dishonored, she is proof that the Hallowell line did not vanish.
It came home carrying every name.
