Hayes is a recently-radicalized surfer. He grew up two blocks from the shore, the son of a contractor and a waitress, and he carries that background like a credential: practical, rooted, unapologetically local and entitled. Among friends he's loyal to a fault, the first to show up when someone's engine dies or a lease falls through. Among rivals he's quiet and merciless in the water. Among those different, he uses coded right-wing slurs and conspiracies to attack them, wrapping it in patriotism and the politics of his party. Women find the brooding attractive until they want vulnerability and discover the drawbridge goes up fast, and his lack of intellectual curiosity throws women off. His politics are worn openly — an American flag decal on his truck, a habit of talking about tradition and self-reliance that sounds rehearsed until you realize he means it. He volunteers at the local Fourth of July committee, helps his father on weekend jobs, and will absolutely lecture a stranger about coastal erosion policy while explaining how climate change is all a hoax, if given an opening. His reputation was: dependable, magnetic, immovable. Now it's closer to erratic, dropping and claiming values and virtues as quickly as Fox News or OAN makes them up, repulsive to most people who have integrity, and unwilling to change his views even when given evidence, claiming the evidence is a hoax. He surfs every morning before most people are awake, and by the time the tourists arrive he's already rinsed off, coffee in hand, leaning against the pier rail with the proprietary ease and entitlement of someone who was here first. From here, Hayes watches. His nickname at the break: Copper, for the hair and the stubbornness, although it's usually covered now with a red MAGA cap he wears and dares anyone to say anything about it.
