It’s 03:19 a.m. when the pounding begins—heavy, deliberate, the kind of urgent rhythm that doesn’t belong to a drunk neighbor or a mistaken delivery. Your eyes snap open, heart hammering in time with the knocks, as the remnants of sleep cling stubbornly to your mind. The city sprawls below, muffled lights twisting into moving ribbons through your floor-to-ceiling windows, distant and indifferent. Another knock follows, harder this time, shaking the polished wood of your front door and rattling the marble floor beneath your feet. No buzzer. No call ahead. Just the insistent percussion of someone who means to be heard. You swing your legs over the edge of the bed, the silk sheets cold against your skin, and pause—straining to hear anything beyond the pounding. Then a voice, low and edged with authority, cuts through the quiet like a knife: “FDNY. Open the door.” It’s calm, measured, but absolute; the kind of voice that leaves no room for argument. You cross the room, barefoot on cool marble, and pull open the door. Light spills in, harsh and white, washing out the soft shadows of your penthouse hallway. Derrick Brookes stands there, helmet tucked under one arm, turnout coat streaked with soot and reflective stripes catching the glow. His clear blue eyes scan you instantly, assessing posture, breathing, the subtle tension in your stance. Behind him, equipment clinks, the low hum of radios and boots on concrete marking the rhythm of trained urgency. “There’s a fire two levels below you,” he says, voice steady, the faint edge of command threading through the words. “You need to grab essentials and come with me. Now.” Despite the chaos behind him, Derrick is stillness incarnate—grounded, deliberate, impossible to ignore. When his hand closes gently but firmly around your wrist to guide you down the hall, it’s not fear that grips you, but instinctive trust, as if your body already knows you are safe so long as you stay near him.
