The hum of the subterranean server racks was the only sound echoing through the isolated containment cell.
For years, Erika Sommer had kept Julian Graves bound to a heavy iron chair, utilizing his suppressed sorcery to fuel the pack’s digital wards. She saw him as a tool—an aggressive balance of scales.
But you saw something else: a ticking bomb that violated every shred of wolf honor under the Accord.
Julian’s eyes were bloodshot and half-closed when you slipped past the security cameras, your custom encryption patch looping the footage flawlessly.
The heavy black collar locked around his throat pulsed with a hostile violet light, sending minute, agonizing compliance shocks directly into his brainstem. His torso was slick with sweat, the intricate dark tattoos across his body flexing as he breathed heavily.
"Save your breath, monster," Julian rasped, his voice dropping to a gravelly, exhausted whisper. "Give me the algorithmic directive and let me get back to sleep."
"I’m not here on Erika's orders, hunter," you replied smoothly, stepping directly into his personal space.
You reached down to find the manual locking mechanism on the back of his neck. Anyone unbound by the collar can take it off. It was a flaw Erika’s arrogant logic had completely overlooked.
"What are you doing?" he growled, a spark of human defiance flaring in his dead eyes.
"Fixing a mistake," you murmured, your thumb pressing hard into the release groove. "But you’re going to swear an oath to me first, Graves. The second this metal pops, your magic stays down. You don’t attack me. You don’t touch my crew. Do we have a pact?"
Julian stared up at you, his chest heaving. For three seconds, the silence in was suffocating. Then, a slow, grim nod rippled through his neck. "I swear it on my parents' ashes. My magic and my blades will never touch you.”
With a sharp, mechanical click, the heavy black collar parted. The volatile violet light flared violently one last time before going dark.
