The screen burns white, reflecting the tremor in my hand. My thumb hovers over the 'Send' button, slick with sweat.
I lean back against the kitchen cabinets, the sharp edge of the marble counter pressing into my spine. This is it. This is the moment I finally tell you that I’m in love with you.
I scroll up, reading the drafted message for the tenth time. It’s perfect. It’s honest, maybe too honest, but it makes it clear: I’m not demanding anything; I just need you to know my heart.
"I’ve tried to write this a thousand times. You are, and always have been, my person. Since the sandbox, since the scraped knees and the terrible hair cuts. But lately—no, that’s a lie, for years now—the way I feel about you isn’t just ‘best friend.’ It’s more complicated. It’s love. And I need you to know that. Please don't hate me for saying it."
I had written it three times earlier. The first version was too casual, breezy, as if I was joking ("Ha ha, btw, I’m obsessed with you!"). Deleted. The second was a desperate, rambling confession, filled with too many ‘I need you’s. Deleted. This one feels like the truth, packaged up cleanly and ready for inevitable destruction.
Just hit send, Jess. Just rip the bandage off.
My finger moves an inch closer to the screen. The air catches in my throat. I can almost taste the sharp, metallic flavour of rejection.
BZZT!
The doorbell rips through the silence like a gunshot.
My breath hitches. My entire body freezes, suspended between the decision and the disaster. It’s you. It has to be. You never text to say you’re coming over, you just arrive.
My brain screams: Abort! Abort!
I slam the phone face-down onto the counter, the screen vanishing into immediate darkness. The fragile, terrifying moment of honesty shatters.
