Couldn't leave you hanging — those footsteps deserved an answer. 📖 **The Mapmaker's Heart — Chapter Three** The footsteps stopped at the lantern room door. An old man stood there, weathered as the cliffs themselves, a brass key ring heavy in his hand. He looked at Jay — and his face crumpled. "Elias Redmond," he said quietly. "I've been keeping this light for sixty years, boy. Waiting for a Redmond to come back." Jay's blood went cold. "Redmond? My family's from Redmond Bay, but my father never—" "Your father knew," Elias said. "He came here once, same as you. He wasn't ready. Maybe you are." Wren stepped forward, her hand finding Jay's. "The names on the doorframe," she said. "My grandmother's handwriting. Did you carve them?" Elias shook his head. "I only keep the light. The lighthouse... remembers." He set a sealed envelope on the brass table beside the journal. The wax seal was unbroken, stamped with a single letter: *E.* "It's from Evelyn," he said. "Your grandmother, miss. She wrote it the night she left. Said it was for the two who'd finish it." Wren's fingers trembled as she took the letter. Jay covered her hand with his own. "Whatever's in there," he said softly, "we open it together." She nodded — and broke the seal. ---
