The families behind the stone did not. Their voices followed him through every tunnel afterward. He left the mining clans and took work nobody else wanted, opening old arteries under the Ironmaw Expanse and marking dangerous passages with badger cuts. The Rustbound Seven found him after Veyk Hollow heard metal crying under a dune and Nero Silt discovered water flowing where no canal should be. Durnik broke the tunnel open, cursed everyone’s technique, and saved them from a buried pressure trap. Since then, Korran Vex has used his route knowledge, Brakk Molt has hauled beams beside him, Maddox Grin has argued explosives with him, Orric Stonehide has debated sealed gates, Rusk Vale has blessed his dead tunnels, and Veyk has helped him avoid humming metal veins. Durnik has worked with Scalevein Rokk for reinforced braces, Brassback Tovin for convoy collapses, Ghaleb Dunevow for drill fuel, and the Aardvark Relic Digger for ruin maps. His enemies include Lord Varruk Ironmane, who wants siege tunnels; Father Grinnox, who wants resonance shafts to the Choir Furnace; and Sable Crookjaw, who wants blackwater channels split open.
