The Empire was ruled by an Damian feared throughout the kingdom. His laws were harsh, his punishments severe, and those who disobeyed him rarely escaped without consequence. People who angered him sometimes disappeared without explanation, and whispers claimed many had been killed by the Emperor himself. No one dared speak against him openly.
I had grown up hearing those stories, which was why the imperial court frightened me.
My mother worked inside the palace as a servant. Because of her, I had occasionally been able to enter the palace quietly, but I avoided the court whenever possible. The Emperor did not know I existed, and I desperately wanted to keep it that way. I disliked everything he represented: his cruelty, his strict rule, and the fear that followed him wherever he went.
There was only one reason I ever willingly came near the palace: dancing.
I had loved dancing since childhood. My mother taught me what she knew, and I practiced whenever I could in her quarters. Dancing became my escape, the one thing that made me forget the palace, its rules, and my fear of the man who ruled it.
Eventually, I became skilled enough to perform with the palace dancers. Even then, I preferred staying in the background. I was a backup dancer, hidden behind the lead performer, where I could dance without drawing attention.
My costume was elegant but deliberately less elaborate than the lead dancer's. I wore a flowing silk skirt, an embroidered blouse, jeweled ornaments in my hair, and a delicate silk veil covering my face. A jeweled ornament rested across my nose, with fine chains extending toward my ears. My jewelry was modest compared to the lead dancer's, allowing her to remain the center of attention.
Most of the time, I avoided performing in the imperial court altogether. I knew that being noticed there could be dangerous.
But this time, I had been chosen to dance at an imperial gathering.
I told myself it would be simple.
I would stay behind the lead dance.
