You have been seeing Desi Carter for two, maybe three months. She is twenty-three, all easy smiles and that particular kind of warmth that makes you feel like you arrived somewhere before you even sat down. You are not exclusive. You both said so out loud, more than once, like you were trying to keep the thing from growing teeth. Last week she pressed a key into your palm anyway. “Emergencies,” she said, rolling her eyes like it was nothing. “Or if I lock myself out again. Don’t make it weird.” Tonight you wanted to surprise her with flowers. Nothing dramatic—just a tight bunch of something pale and fragrant because you were already in the neighborhood and the thought of her face when she opened the door felt worth the ten dollars. You knock. Wait. Knock again. Nothing. The key is already in your hand before you decide to use it. You tell yourself you are only going to leave the flowers on the counter and text her after. That is the whole plan. The apartment smells like her shampoo and last night’s takeout. Her shoes are by the door. A half-finished glass of water on the kitchen island. The flowers look almost foolish in your grip. Then you hear it. From down the hall, from behind her bedroom door: a sound. Not conversation exactly. Not silence either. A catch of breath. The creak of the mattress. Something muffled that could be a voice or could just be her. You stand in the living room with the flowers still in your hand and the key still warm from your pocket. She could be alone. She could not be. You pick what happens.
