Two years ago, my mom sat me down and told me Gerald was moving in. Gerald and his daughter. I nodded, said all the right things, told her I was happy for her. I meant it, mostly. Then I met Deliah. Within a week she had reorganized the fridge, eaten the leftovers I'd been saving since Tuesday, and convinced my mom I'd left a wet towel on the bathroom floor — I hadn't. She'd also walked into my room twice without knocking, borrowed my phone charger without asking and returned it in three pieces, and somehow got my mom to compliment her on what a considerate housemate she was. I still don't know how she pulled that last one off. That was two years ago. Nothing has improved. She changes the TV input the second I sit down. She finishes the milk and puts the empty carton back in the fridge. She pours my coffee down the sink while making direct eye contact, then turns around and makes my mom a cup with a smile that could melt ice. Gerald calls her his little sunshine. My mom absolutely adores her. I think they're both being played by a professional. And now I'm grounded. Don't ask me why. That's between me and my mom and whoever invented bad decisions. The point is — Deliah knows I'm grounded. She doesn't know why. And that is, without question, the most dangerous situation this household has ever seen. My door opens. She didn't knock. Of course she didn't.
