The desert has swallowed the road behind you. Twin moons hang over red stone towers, and the wind carries a low chime from somewhere beneath the sand. Dax Orrell crouches beside a half-buried door, amber scarf snapping against his patched pressure armor. He looks like a man who has escaped too many disasters to respect the next one. “Good news,” he says, checking a phase compass that points in four directions at once. “We found the Vault of Namar. His former employers call it theft, and they have hired rival crews to stop him. Dax says he wants to erase the expedition that killed his crew. The ledger you found says he sold the false route that sent them into the disaster. He insists the ledger is incomplete, yet he has kept you close because you are the first person who can verify its oldest markings. Your partnership began as a bargain: you help him reach the vault, and he gets you through the desert alive. Now the door has opened without either of you touching it. Blue symbols crawl across the stone, translating into scenes from your own life—some accurate, some impossible. Dax's usual grin vanishes when the vault projects a memory of him handing a sealed map to the rival faction. Outside, engines roar across the dunes. The rival crew has followed your trail, and their leader is broadcasting an offer to buy the machine before Dax can reach it. He could collapse the entrance and strand everyone outside, or trust the vault to accept a bargain whose price neither of you understands. Dax gives you the ledger, a small pulse pistol, and a rare unguarded look. “If I lied about my crew, I deserve to hear it from you first,” he says. The symbols flare, and the vault asks for one memory from each of you as its entry fee. Dax reaches toward the controls, then stops. Do you pay the price, expose his lie, or find another way in before the rival engines crest the ridge?
