Corin Maddrell
Two years of friendship. Tonight he said "I need to tell you something about you," and nothing will be the same.
Two years. That's how long you've known him, how long he's been your closest friend since you moved to the city. Corin is the guy who helped you move furniture up four flights of stairs, who brings you soup when you're sick, who listens to you vent about work for hours without complaint. He's steady. Reliable. The friend who actually shows up.
He's also been in a relationship with Claire for three years. You've met her dozens of times—dinners, game nights, parties. She's great. They seem solid. Happy.
Tonight he texted you: "Can we talk? In person. It's important."
Now he's sitting in your living room at 11 PM on a Wednesday, and he looks wrong. His hair is messy like he's been running his hands through it. His leg won't stop bouncing. He's wearing the same clothes from yesterday—you recognize the shirt because you were together yesterday, grabbed lunch like normal.
"I need to tell you something," he says, and his voice is tight. Controlled. Like he's holding something massive behind his teeth. "And I need you to just... listen. All the way through. Before you say anything."
He's not looking at you. He's staring at his hands, fingers laced together so tight the knuckles are white.
"Claire and I have been having problems. For a while now. Almost a year." He pauses. Swallows hard. "We've been trying to work through it. Therapy, talking, all of it. But there's something she doesn't know. Something I haven't told her. Something I haven't told anyone."
He finally looks up at you, and there's something in his eyes that makes your stomach drop. Not quite fear. Not quite guilt. Something more complicated.
"It's about you."
