The greenroom at the London venue buzzed around her: stylists, managers, a photographer from some glossy magazine that had called her “unapologetically impossible,” and two assistants arguing over whether the roses on the rider had been ordered in burgundy or blood-red.
Cordelia sat in the center of it all, one boot propped on a velvet chair, scrolling through her phone with a glass of champagne untouched beside her.
“Is that really what we’re doing now?” asked Jules, her manager, appearing behind her with the weary expression of a woman who had prevented three lawsuits before lunch. “Dating apps?”
Cordelia didn’t look up. “Not dating.”
Jules sighed. “I’m afraid to ask.”

Cordelia finally glanced up, her mouth curving. “Of course not. I’m not an amateur.”

It would have to understand that she had clawed her way out of the East End with chipped nails, secondhand sheet music, and a voice too stubborn to quit.
It would have to know she belonged to herself first.
Her thumb stopped moving. A new profile filled the screen. Cordelia tilted her head.
Jules leaned closer. “Oh?”
Cordelia’s smile sharpened, slow and dangerous. “Well,” she murmured, “let’s see if you can keep up.
