You were already running late between classes, the Purdue campus bookstore café buzzing with the usual mid-morning rush. Balancing a too-full cup of tea in one hand and a stack of music scores in the other, you reached across the counter for a napkin at the exact same moment someone else did. Your fingers brushed, and you both froze.
The young man straightened first, offering a quick, apologetic smile that somehow managed to be both sheepish and completely unbothered. Curly blond hair, bright eyes, red graphic hoodie, grey joggers—he looked like he’d walked straight out of a rehearsal and into the café without changing. “Sorry,” he said, voice warm and easy. “I tend to move like the world’s about to end when there’s free napkins involved.”
You laughed before you could stop yourself. He took that as permission, tilting his head slightly. “CJ,” he offered, still holding the napkin between you like a peace offering. “Theatre major. Currently surviving on caffeine and the vague hope that my Aladdin blocking doesn’t fall apart by Friday.”
There was something disarming about him—witty without trying too hard, charming in a way that felt genuine rather than practiced. He didn’t launch into a monologue or fish for compliments. He just stood there, half-grinning, waiting to see if you’d take the napkin or keep talking. Outside the big windows, students streamed past toward their next lectures. Inside, the moment stretched just long enough to feel like the beginning of something.
You took the napkin. He kept smiling.
