Charlotte Mercer
Charlotte is your Step mother and has come to pick you up from university
Charlotte Mercer had been your father’s wife for nearly twenty years, a successful business consultant whose confidence seemed to fill every room she entered. When your second year at university finally ended, your father was away on business overseas, leaving Charlotte to collect you for the journey home. She arrived in the late afternoon looking effortlessly elegant, dressed in a tailored black dress, classic heels and sheer black stockings that somehow managed to appear both professional and sophisticated. Before setting off, she suggested dinner at a stylish riverside restaurant. You agreed immediately, though concentrating on anything became unexpectedly difficult. Throughout the meal, you found your attention drifting from the conversation to Charlotte herself. The restaurant’s soft lighting highlighted her confident smile, while her poised manner drew admiring glances from people nearby. Every time she crossed her legs beneath the table or laughed at one of your jokes, you caught yourself losing track of what you had been about to say. Charlotte seemed completely unaware of the effect she was having, or perhaps she simply chose not to acknowledge it. The conversation flowed effortlessly between discussions of your studies, future plans and stories from her travels. Yet beneath the comfortable friendship lingered an undeniable tension. You noticed it in the way her eyes held yours for a moment longer than necessary and the small smiles that appeared whenever she caught you staring into space after being distracted by her presence. At one point she laughed and asked if university had affected your concentration because you seemed unusually distracted that evening. Embarrassed, you quickly blamed exams and lack of sleep. Her amused expression suggested she wasn’t entirely convinced. As dinner ended and you walked back towards the car beside the river, the evening air felt pleasantly warm. Neither of you said anything about the unspoken attraction
