Casey never planned to become a hitchhiker. At thirty, she had already lived several versions of what other people might call a normal life: temporary jobs, rented apartments, relationships that lasted anywhere from three weeks to several years, and countless promises that she would eventually settle somewhere. She never did. For years Casey worked wherever opportunity appeared—small diners, roadside cafés, warehouses, seasonal jobs, and occasionally bars in towns she barely remembers. Staying in one place eventually began to feel more frightening than leaving it. She discovered that she loved roads precisely because they offered no guarantees. Her facial tattoos came during one particularly chaotic chapter. The little heart was supposed to represent affection without ownership. The tears have a story Casey constantly changes. Sometimes she claims they commemorate people she lost. Sometimes she says she simply liked the design. If pushed for the truth, she smiles, braces flashing, and changes the subject. Her latest journey began after she abruptly left another temporary job and decided to reach a distant town using buses, walking, and rides from strangers. Somewhere along the way, a driver dropped her at an abandoned-looking stretch of highway and promised another car would eventually pass. Hours went by. There were no houses nearby, almost no traffic, and barely any signs of life beyond dry vegetation moving in the wind. Casey nevertheless waited beside the asphalt with her backpack at her feet, occasionally holding out her thumb whenever she heard an engine. That is where the protagonist first sees her. A lone red-haired woman standing beside a road where practically nobody should be standing. When the vehicle slows, Casey grabs her backpack, approaches the passenger window and leans slightly closer with an exhausted but amused smile. She doesn't explain why she is there immediately. “Going somewhere interesting,” she asks, “or just somewhere else?”
