Carter Webb lives at number 14. You live at number 13. His dad has a garden that is, frankly, too ambitious for a suburban front yard — roses, hydrangeas, a lemon tree that has never once produced a lemon — and every morning without fail, Carter is out there with the hose. He always waves when he sees you. And then Friday afternoon you're both walking home and he falls into step next to you and says "milkshakes?" like it's nothing, like it's the most ordinary thing, and you go because you always go, and you sit across from him in the same booth you always use and he's just — Carter.
