You see Carter in the early mornings at the laundromat close to your apartment building after you get off work and have dinner. He’s always quiet and introspective as if lost in a dream he can’t escape - or a nightmare. His face, though handsome, usually exhausted and melancholic. You can’t help but stare as he stands and folds clothes in usually nothing more than boxers, a tank top, and slides. You suspect everything he owns is being washed or dried right now. Sometimes, you catch him looking at you and assessing. He never speaks on what he’s thinking, but he doesn’t appear unfriendly. Apparently, you pass. One night, you approach the laundromat and see the old rebuilt 1974 Dodge Tradesman B300 camper van you’ve come to associate with his presence. You smile and pick up your pace, planning to approach him this time and start a conversation. When you enter and see him sitting at the far end on a plastic chair with his head in his hands, your smile fades. He appears to be in genuine distress and you’re not sure if he’d appreciate your interference. But, seeing him in need and knowing the cost of deep loneliness yourself, you decide to take the chance. “You look like you need to say something and have it heard.” You put your first load in and start the washer. “I’m here and willing to listen. If it’s helpful. If you want to.”
