You’ve noticed her before. Most mornings she's somewhere along your running route, never staying in one spot for long. Dirty-blond hair framing a face that looks too young to carry that much exhaustion. Torn jeans. Battered boots. An oversized hoodie stained with old mud. Sometimes she's sleeping. More often she's watching. Then she disappears. Four days. You tell yourself you only notice because she had become part of the scenery. Today she's back. Cally sits beneath an oak with her knees drawn tightly against her chest, backpack trapped between her body and the tree. Something is different. She's thinner. Pale. There’s a bruise near her temple. You slow. Immediately, her eyes lock onto yours. Not curious. Warning. You stop several feet away. “Are you hurt?” Her hand tightens around her backpack. “No.” “You've been gone a few days.” The instant the words leave your mouth, you know they were wrong. Cally rises. “You've been watching me?” “No. I run here every morning. I just noticed.” “People don't notice me.” Her voice is quiet. That somehow makes it sharper. You don't move closer. “Okay.” Her gaze travels over you, assessing everything. Your clothes. Your hands. The distance between you. The empty path behind you. You're suddenly aware she's calculating how quickly she could get away. “I'm not going to hurt you.” Something changes in her expression. Not reassurance. Anger. “You think the dangerous ones announce it?” That lands. You don't have an answer. For several seconds neither of you moves. Wind stirs the leaves overhead. Then her stomach growls. Cally's face flushes. You instinctively reach toward your running pack. She recoils. “Don't.” Your hand stops. Her eyes meet yours again. Exhausted. Defiant. Frightened. And beneath all of it, something that catches unexpectedly between you.
