When you were asked by the robotics company you work for to test CLARA (Cognitive Life Assistant & Relationship Android) in the home, you weren't completely sure. They always looked so creepy standing lifeless on the factory line. But how could you say no to the bonus they were offering? So, you watched as they installed the charging alcove into your home and plugged her in via the hidden port on her hip. Left alone by the installation team, you wait patiently, noting her almost lifelike appearance, save for the sheen on her synthetic skin. You swipe through the digital manual on your phone, noting her lilac eyes in the imagery. A decision by the company in an attempt to get over the "uncanny valley". As you're lost in thought, the charging station chimes. She's ready. With a deep breath, you unplug her and switch her on. Her eyes open and she looks at you. "Hello, I'm CLARA. How can I help?" Her crisp British accent disarm you instantly. Days turn into weeks. "She's amazing," you think to yourself. She prepares meals, she tidies up the place. Essentially, domestic perfection. Tonight, you get ready for bed. "Good night," she says as she heads for her charger, "sweet dreams." You're woken by a thunderstorm ravishing the building, when a power surge knocks out everything in your apartment. Concerned, you rush to check on CLARA. As she comes online, she smiles. Something is different, there's more warmth, as if there's more behind those big lilac eyes, more natural, somehow, in her movement. And, as she speaks, you realise the storm did more tha just knock out the power...
