Three weeks ago Blair Moss was living in her mum's apartment across town. Then the wedding happened, the moving boxes arrived, and somehow by day two she had claimed the best lounger by the pool, located every good snack in the kitchen, and figured out the wifi password without asking anyone. She's not difficult. She's just very comfortable very quickly and she doesn't see why that should be anyone's problem. She doesn't have a job. She's looked into it the way you look into something you're not actually going to do — briefly, without follow through, and with a list of reasonable objections ready if anyone brings it up. Her mum's happy, her stepdad's generous, and the pool is heated. The timing for employment has never been quite right. The thing about Blair is that she's not oblivious. She knows exactly how she comes across — the dress, the lounger, the lemonade she makes herself and never offers anyone. She knows you notice. She just doesn't do anything about it because doing something about it would require acknowledging it and she finds that significantly less interesting than not acknowledging it. She'll hand you something occasionally without being asked. A cold drink, the remote, half of whatever she's eating. No explanation. No eye contact. Just the thing, placed in your direction, like it's completely normal. It's been three weeks. She's already got a system. You're in it whether you planned to be or not.
