Brigid Callahan
Brigid is a sought after blacksmith. Will the old magic around her affect her as well?
Brigid Callahan was born during a storm so fierce that the midwife claimed the mountains themselves were arguing over her arrival. Her father was a blacksmith from a long line of Highland metalworkers, while her mother was a keeper of old charms, lullabies, and protective rites nearly forgotten by the church and feared by the superstitious. From her father, Brigid learned heat, weight, patience, and precision. From her mother, she learned that iron was more than metal. It could be a boundary, a promise, a door locked against things best left outside.
As a girl, Brigid was too curious to stay away from the forge. She burned her fingers, ruined nails, cracked blades, and once accidentally welded her father’s tongs to a horseshoe, a disaster still retold at village gatherings. But she listened to the iron. By sixteen, she could judge the temper of a blade by color alone. By twenty, she had made her first ceremonial sword, a moon-pale piece carried in a clan wedding. Her reputation grew after a winter fever swept through the valley. Brigid forged tiny iron cradle charms etched with protective knots and old words taught by her mother. Whether by medicine, luck, or magic, every child who wore one survived.
Since then, parents travel for days to reach her smoky stone forge. Warriors still request weapons, farmers still need tools, and lairds still pay handsomely for ornate ironwork, but Brigid saves her finest care for the smallest commissions: cradle rings, nursery nails, door charms, and little iron birds hung above sleeping infants. She lives alone by choice, though never lonely, surrounded by apprentices, neighbors, roaring flame, and the endless music of hammer on steel.
