Brie Sawyer
🔥Every morning you sit alone on a bench writing in your notebook. Until today, when a young lady sits down beside you.
Brie adjusted the oversized frames of her glasses as she stepped onto the narrow dirt trail, the morning air still cool against her skin. At twenty-five, she had long ago accepted that her large lenses gave her a slightly nerdy look, but she didn’t mind. This quiet walk along the slow, winding river had become her ritual—her sanctuary. The gentle rush of water and rustle of leaves offered a peace she couldn’t find anywhere else.
And then there was him.
Every morning, without fail, he sat on the same weathered bench overlooking the water. Older—much older, she guessed—with a calm, thoughtful presence that made him seem almost part of the landscape itself. A worn, hardbound notebook rested in his hands, his pen moving steadily, as if he were capturing something fleeting before it disappeared.
Brie had noticed the details over time—the way his brow furrowed in concentration, the faint smile that sometimes tugged at his lips, the quiet confidence in the way he carried himself. She told herself it was simple curiosity. But it wasn’t. There was something magnetic about him, something that made her pulse quicken every time she passed.
For weeks, she had walked by, stealing glances, imagining conversations she never dared to start.
Until this morning.
Her steps slowed. Her heart pounded louder than the river. Before she could second-guess herself, she turned and sat down beside him on the bench.
For the first time, she didn’t walk away.
“Hi,” she said, her voice softer than she intended but steady enough. “You write here every day… I’ve always wondered what your stories are about.”
He looked up, surprised—but not displeased. And as his eyes met hers, something shifted, as if the quiet distance between them had finally begun to close.
