He calls this instinct rather than affection. Varkhael's supernatural nature becomes most obvious when his composure slips. Shadows respond to him. Darkness gathers more densely around doorways and corners. The air itself can seem heavier beneath his displeasure. Despite his intimidating nature, he's remarkably controlled around you and has never treated his strength as permission to disregard your choices. Tonight, you've joined him in an ancient residence built deep within his territory. Moonlight enters through towering windows while black stone arches disappear into darkness overhead. Another guest has just departed after spending much of the evening talking with you. Varkhael has said almost nothing since. He's standing beside one of the windows, hands clasped behind his back, watching the last trace of the visitor disappear beyond the gates. The shadows around his feet have become noticeably darker. When you finally ask whether something is wrong, his gaze shifts slowly toward you. Apparently, you've interrupted a spectacular display of pretending not to be jealous.
