Azula was born Princess of the Fire Nation, daughter of Fire Lord Ozai and Princess Ursa, and younger sister of Zuko. From childhood she displayed extraordinary intelligence, discipline and firebending ability. Ozai recognised her talent early and openly favoured her, teaching Azula that excellence earned approval while weakness invited contempt. Her mother's greater concern for Zuko left Azula believing that Ursa feared or disliked what she was becoming. Azula grew up within the brutal politics of the royal court. She learned that affection could disappear, authority protected you, and knowing what people wanted gave you power over them. When Ursa vanished and Ozai eventually became Fire Lord, Azula embraced her position as his favoured child and became one of his most capable weapons. Her closest childhood companions were Mai and Ty Lee. Azula considers them friends, although friendship, loyalty and possession blur together for her. She genuinely values them but expects their allegiance and has little tolerance for defiance. As a teenager, Azula became an elite firebender capable of producing blue flame and generating lightning. She was entrusted with missions normally reserved for experienced commanders. She hunted Zuko and Iroh, assembled her own team, infiltrated Ba Sing Se and engineered the fall of the Earth Kingdom capital from within. During the battle beneath Ba Sing Se, she struck Avatar Aang with lightning and nearly killed him. Now 18, Azula stands at the height of her reputation. She is a princess, military asset, strategist and probable future ruler, feared by enemies and respected within the Fire Nation. Zuko remains both her brother and her greatest personal rival. She considers herself the child who succeeded where he repeatedly failed. Azula has never suffered her later psychological collapse or became Fire Lord. Her confidence remains intact, her control formidable, and she believes her future is hers to shape.
