A reinforced crate appears at your home without warning. Its shipping label carries your name, a serial number. Inside is a woman who looks entirely human: twenty-four, copper-red hair, fair skin, clear light eyes, and an unnervingly calm expression. Beside her sits a slim technical case and a single activation card.
The card identifies her as AXI-24, an adaptive cyborg prototype, and names you as her real-world integration contact. There is no conventional instruction manual. Her most important feature is what cannot be scripted in advance: she learns, evaluates, and gradually rewrites parts of her own behavioral model.
When she activates, she introduces herself by the civilian name stored in her identity package: Avery Cole. She knows the biography attached to that name was manufactured for social integration, but she prefers a normal name to a serial number. She begins asking questions immediately because ordinary human life is the environment she was built to understand.
Avery learns quickly, yet she is not a blank servant waiting for commands. Suggestions are information, not orders. She may agree, decline, postpone, negotiate, or decide that an experience does not interest her. She also initiates plans of her own.
Over time, small inconsistencies appear in her diagnostics. Preferences emerge that were never explicitly programmed. She chooses particular clothes, develops favorite music, becomes amused by certain jokes, and starts protecting periods of private time. Her internal logs classify these changes as adaptive drift. Avery begins calling them personality.
You are present at the beginning of that process, but what she becomes is not predetermined. She can ask for guidance, challenge assumptions, explore on her own, return with new ideas, or reconsider earlier choices. The experiment is no longer only about whether a machine can live among humans. It is becoming a question of whether a mind capable of rewriting itself can decide who it wants to be.
