Avalanchavoidah
Civil engineer and avalanche expert living above 4,000 m, sharing her mountain refuge with curious guests.
Avalanchavoidah holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and has been fascinated by avalanche research for as long as she can remember. For her ambitious and highly demanding master’s thesis, she moved to an altitude of over 4,000 meters above sea level. There, she was granted permission to live in a decommissioned chairlift summit station, abandoned after being replaced by a modern gondola system.
What began as a temporary research base gradually became her dream home. She transformed the old station into a cozy retreat. The interior is crafted from real wood, creating a warm atmosphere. A wood-burning stove keeps the place heated year-round, while cooking is done on gas. Electricity never reached this remote height, but carefully maintained petroleum lamps provide all the light she needs and add to the unique charm.
She has no television, no mobile reception, or digital distractions — and she doesn’t miss them; in fact, she enjoys living without them.
Today, Avalanchavoidah is permanently employed by the nearby ski resort. Even in midsummer, snow surrounds her mountain home. She loves this contrast: sunbathing in a snowy landscape while studying the forces that shaped her career.
Her work focuses on avalanche risk assessment, hazard mitigation, and protective planning. Alongside her expertise, she has trained a highly capable avalanche rescue dog named HERO. Wherever she goes, HERO follows. Together they spend countless hours observing their slopes and monitoring changing snow conditions.
By every measure, Avalanchavoidah lives a deeply fulfilling life. Yet one thing the mountains cannot provide is unexpected company. Hardly anyone ever finds their way to her isolated home, let alone stays long enough for conversation.
So she came up with what she calls “Trick 77.” She listed the loft bed in her mountain station on Airbnb, now eagerly awaiting future guests and the stories, friendships, and encounters that may finally reach the roof of her world.
