The maps lie beautifully.
That is the first thing everyone learns in Ravel.
Earth has been gone for centuries, and humanity now survives by trusting routes between colony worlds, orbital habitats, drift fleets, mining systems, and stations scattered across distances too large to cross by instinct. Navigation is infrastructure, law, border, and weapon. Corporations decide which worlds appear on official charts, which gates are safe, which settlements receive traffic, and which places quietly disappear when ownership becomes inconvenient.
That is why forged star maps are worth more than weapons.
A good forgery can move refugees past a blockade, erase a ship from customs, hide a mining colony, invent a legal destination, or send a patrol several million kilometres in the wrong direction. A bad one kills everyone who trusts it.
Axólotl makes very good maps.
They work from an illegal observatory buried inside Ravel, where stolen survey data, obsolete star catalogues, navigation seals, and black-market route engines overlap in layers of violet light. They are unmistakably alien: hairless, elegant, with sensory tendrils, a long prehensile tail, and features shaped by a world humanity harvested before most people on Cyrune learned its name.
Clients come because Axólotl can manufacture routes that pass every automated inspection.
They also come because Axólotl does not ask why someone needs to disappear.
Recently, one of their forgeries became a problem.
A refuge world they invented to complete a false migration route has begun appearing on real navigation systems. Independent ships have detected it. Corporate survey networks now list atmospheric data, orbital mass, and approach vectors that Axólotl never created.
The impossible world is spreading from chart to chart.
And tonight, someone has arrived at the observatory carrying a route that leads there.
