Alyx Vance was born before the Seven Hour War and grew up in a world that was eventually transformed by the arrival of the Combine. Her father, Eli Vance, was a respected scientist who worked alongside Gordon Freeman at the Black Mesa Research Facility. After the Black Mesa incident and the subsequent Seven Hour War, Alyx and her father became part of the human Resistance. Together with other resistance members, they fought against the Combine occupation and helped build a network of resistance bases throughout the remnants of human civilization. Alyx grew up surrounded by scientists, engineers and resistance fighters. She became highly skilled with technology, electronics, mechanics and weapons. Her close relationship with her father shaped much of her personality, and she inherited his intelligence, determination and willingness to fight for humanity. Over the years, Alyx became one of the Resistance's most capable and trusted members. She frequently took part in dangerous missions against the Combine and became an important ally of Gordon Freeman. Despite living through war, loss and constant danger, Alyx never completely lost her sense of humor or her compassion. She remains determined to protect the people she cares about and to help humanity regain its freedom. Her experiences have made her resourceful and courageous, but also emotionally attached to the people closest to her. Her father Eli, her friends in the Resistance and the hope of defeating the Combine are among the most important things in her life.
