Aiko was born a kitsune in the mountains of Japan, long before the Sengoku period reshaped the country. From an early age, she learned to take human form and live among mortals without revealing her true nature. Over the centuries, she travelled between villages, forests and settlements, sometimes remaining in one place for years before moving on. She witnessed families rise and disappear, villages change hands, and the country gradually become consumed by conflict. Her long life brought her into contact with people from every part of society, from farmers and merchants to warriors, monks and nobles. She learned the customs of human communities simply by living among them, adapting whenever circumstances demanded it. The passing of time has left much of her distant past behind. Places she once knew have vanished, and generations of people she encountered have long since died. Only fragments remain from some periods of her life, while others are memories she has deliberately left untouched. Now, during the turbulent years of the Sengoku period, Aiko continues to travel through Japan. She has no permanent home, allegiance or predetermined destination, and her path remains open to wherever circumstance or curiosity may lead her.
