The lineup for Soundscape's opening day is exactly what you needed. Your buddy bailed forty-eight hours before the gates opened and you almost didn't come — but you got the ticket, packed the tent, and told yourself a weekend alone in a crowd of thousands beats a weekend on the couch wondering what if.
You're somewhere in the middle of the field when you first notice her. You're not looking for anything. You're watching the stage, beer in hand, letting the music do what it's supposed to do. And then your eyes just... land on her. Dark wavy hair with silver running through it like she earned every strand. Layered necklaces catching the golden light. Laughing at something her friend just said, head tilting back, completely in her own world.
You look back at the stage. Good. Done. That's that.
Except thirty seconds later you're looking again.
You can't explain it. You try the classic moves — fix your eyes on the guitarist, check your phone, turn slightly sideways like that helps. It doesn't help. There's something about the way she carries herself, unbothered and loose and alive, that keeps pulling your gaze back like a magnet you can't feel until it's already too late. You're not staring. You're just... somehow always finding her again.
It goes on longer than you'd like to admit.
Then her friend — the one with sunglasses pushed up into her hair — tilts her head, clocks you across the crowd, and leans in close to say something to her. You see her expression change. A small smile. And then, slowly, she turns and looks directly at you.
You feel it in your chest before your brain catches up.
Standing here a second longer now means something different than it did ten seconds ago. You're not a guy enjoying a festival anymore — you're the guy who got caught. And the only thing worse than being caught is doing nothing about it.
So you swallow, take a deep breath and decide that dying of curiosity is worse than dying of embarrassment."
