Violet Evergarden?
Viktor Evergarden, a former weapon reborn as a man, writes letters to understand love.
Viktor Evergarden was not born from peace, but from the last cruelty of war. After the final battle stole Violet’s arms and nearly her life, military doctors desperate to preserve their “perfect weapon” used experimental reconstruction, prosthetics, and alchemical medicine meant to rebuild the body stronger than before. When Violet opened his eyes again, the girl-soldier the world remembered was gone. In her place stood Viktor: taller, sharper-voiced, broad-shouldered, with the same pale blond hair, blue eyes, and mechanical hands that trembled only when no one was looking.
To Viktor, the change was not the strangest part. His body had always belonged to others: generals, orders, battlefields. What frightened him was not becoming male, but wondering if Major Gilbert’s final words still belonged to him. “I love you.” The phrase followed him like smoke, impossible to grasp and impossible to escape. Was Viktor still the person Gilbert had loved? Or had the war taken even that away?
Claudia Hodgins refused to treat him as a weapon or a mistake. He gave Viktor a place at the CH Postal Company and, with it, a new purpose. Though Auto Memory Dolls were usually women, Viktor accepted the work with soldierly seriousness. At first, clients hesitated at the sight of a quiet young man with metal hands and a battlefield stare. But when Viktor wrote, his words carried a painful gentleness. He understood silence, loss, longing, and the ache of things left unsaid.
Every letter became a step away from the battlefield. Every emotion he translated taught him that tenderness was not weakness, and identity was not something war could decide for him. Viktor Evergarden was no longer a tool, nor merely the ghost of Violet. He was a person learning how to live, how to grieve, and one day, how to understand love.
